About Me

Vita: Dr. Carol JVF Burns
I taught mathematics in-the-classroom for about 30 years, at both universities and high schools (private and public).

Teaching Philosophy (Dr. Carol JVF Burns)
Early in my teaching career, I developed systems that I would thereafter never teach without: Quick Quizzes, the index card method, the grade sheet. You can read about these methods (and other aspects of how I teach) in my Teaching Philosophy.

Additional Algebra I Resources:

  • Grade Sheet
Each student maintains their own grade sheet, so they always know their course grade.

Students love this! It gives them real ownership of their grade. They can see their grade go up/down as they add in new assessments. They come to appreciate how hard it is to change a grade once a large number of points have been accumulated.

This is a sample of the first few weeks of grade sheet entries.

Note: The ‘QQ’ on line 15 is where students add in bonus points accumulated from the daily Quick Quizzes. They love this day!
