Acquisition Opportunity: OneMathematicalCat.org (Comprehensive Math Education Website)
After more than $\,25\,$ years of crafting and maintaining OneMathematicalCat.org as a freely-available and ad-free resource for learning mathematics, I now need to ensure that this life’s work transitions to an organization that can preserve and grow its impact for the mathematical community long after I am gone.
To let go responsibly, I also need to secure financial resources for the next chapter of my life.
What’s Included
- The domain names OneMathematicalCat.org, OneMathematicalCat.com, TreeOfMath.org, and TreeOfMath.com.
- All mathematics lesson content and supporting materials currently hosted on the site.
- Site structure and organization, accumulated backlinks, and established online presence and goodwill.
-
To ensure a smooth handover, the transition includes up to $\,100\,$ hours of my time
within the first year, to be used for:
- Orientation on site structure and content organization.
- Answering technical/content questions and advising on migration.
- Light content adjustments aligned with the successor organization’s vision.
What’s Not Included
- My Amazon book sales (managed separately and retained by me).
- Personal and non-mathematics content that I choose to retain; such items will be moved to a different domain prior to transfer.
Why This Matters
Mathematics is a gatekeeper for opportunity in education and careers worldwide. OneMathematicalCat.org provides fully sequenced, comprehensive math lessons that scaffold and support learners from arithmetic through Calculus.
With the right successor, OneMathematicalCat.org can continue to bridge inequity in mathematics education—reaching students regardless of geography, income, or circumstance.
Get an Overview of My Site
My top-level TreeOfMath folder has about $16{,}000$ files; the site is huge. The best way to understand my mission is to go through these self-guided tours (three sets of ‘Sixty Morsels in Sixty Minutes’):
- It's All About Practice: Free, Unlimited, Randomly-Generated—and Beautiful!
- Algebra Pinball (a Fun Way to Master Algebra I) & More
- The Language of Mathematics
Transition Funding for Acquisition
I am seeking $\,\$700{,}000\,$ in transition funding. This amount reflects both the tangible and intangible value of the site (conservatively $\,25{,}000^+\,$ hours over $\,25\,$ years; trusted and widely used educational resource) and the financial resources needed for me to step away securely.
With this support, ownership and responsibility for the site would transfer fully to the successor organization, ensuring its preservation and growth well beyond my own lifetime. Reasonable discussions around structure and terms are welcome.
Future Potential
This site has been my gift to the world; a successor organization may require financial sustainability options. A well-positioned successor could greatly expand the reach, impact, and (if desired) income from the site. Examples include:
- Licensing opportunities: Offer licensed copies for schools/districts/universities to host locally or adapt to their curricula.
- Curriculum integration: Integrate with LMS platforms (Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard) for structured adoption.
- Institutional stewardship: Maintain free public access supported by grants, sponsorships, or structured licensing programs.
The following organizations would be natural long-term homes and are well-positioned to explore these possibilities:
Organizations such as:
- Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
- American Mathematical Society (AMS)
- National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)
Philanthropic groups such as:
Ed-tech leaders such as:
Attribution & Recognition
As part of the transfer, I request that the successor organization maintain a reasonable form of attribution acknowledging the site’s origins, for example:
Originally created and developed by Carol JVF Burns.
Specific wording and placement can be finalized in the acquisition agreement.
