I personally didn't find out about MathML until about the summer of 2004 as I was ‘finishing up’ the expansion of the CAT book. (Right. Finishing up. I learned long ago that a book is never done.) I had wasted years typing things like Web TeX and TeX for the web into search engines, thinking that SOMEONE must just be extending TeX so that it works on the web.
